Return of Snow Bob!

Notes: Bob and Jesse MADE me go riding this morning in the 26 degree windy snow covered Village Park!  Bob said we NEEDED to get out for the last day of the year.   Sooo, I managed to delay the ride for 30 minutes in the hopes that the mercury would rise just a little. After we got out there, I was glad we did.  Although the snow was tough to pedal through, it was definitely ride-able. We got a few miles in before Bob unfortunately flatted.  He was able to get by with a couple of CO2 fills.

Tidbits: It's going to stay cold this week, so more riders and hikers will make the trails much easier.

Jesse...the "other" bike shop dog!

Big River Flipper Out

  • Trailhead: Exit 7 Pickle me Elmo Parking Lot
  • Riders with OMMB: Matt, Bob, Jeremy, Erik, Shawn?, Al, Dave
  • Miles: my app said 10, J's said 11
  • Weather: overcast, damp cold
  • Temp: 30
  • Trail Conditions: excellent
  • Whoops, Yikes, and Oh Sheets: none that I saw
  • GPS Track:

Notes:  Matt and I collaborated on a nice brisk loop around Carr Pond starting out going up Foster's Folly (and THAT warmed me up good), then out around Flipper, down to the east end of Tarbox Pond, then up to Dead Shed, etc, and out by Lego.  Great route.

Doggone It

  • Place:Village Park
  • Riders with OMMB: Jesse
  • Miles: 5.3
  • Weather: Breezy and Brrrr
  • Trail Conditions: frozen hard pack

Notes: Took the dog out for a run in the woods...since he didn't get out much due to the holiday and rainy weather.  Even though the mud was frozen, of course he managed to find enough open water to run through. Damn...in the cellar to dry off he goes!

Tidbits: Crazy Jesse look-alike.  I imagine this is what he would have looked like as a pup (below).

This pup was found at...  Fanny the Husky mix

Here's the Jesse Dog...

Big River Mix

  • Place: Hopkins Hill Parking Lot
  • Trailhead: West across the road
  • Riders with OMMB: Tom, Taco, Jeff
  • Miles: 10-ish
  • Weather: cold
  • Temp: 26-34
  • Trail Conditions: great... frozen solid and fast.  negligible bits of snow and ice puddles
  • Whoops, Yikes, and Oh Sheets:  from what I saw, there was a Whoops and a Yikes by Tom
  • GPS Track:

Notes: Tom lead us on a great variety of trails from the Hopkins Hill lot. A mixed bag of tight technical single track (I See Dead People), flat out trails (Big River Expressway), winding whoop-dees (along the Cardi Rd), some blacktop (the Cardi Rd), stream crossings (near Tarbox Pond), some climbs (Elephant, etc), and great descents (as that is a given ;) ).  The ride was quite entertaining, with Tom showing us some unique ways to endo over a few different rock-overs...and NOT get hurt!   I think he may have had some circus clown experience in his past (or maybe some strange desire to become a rodeo clown).  And Taco demonstrated how a stick in the rear derailleur can become a puzzle of fun when it snaps the hanger and twists the derailleur in a manner that takes over 30 minutes to piece back together.  I know we had at least two engineers in the group, but that didn't help us, requiring a "cheat" to finish the job (had to pop a chain link and feed the chain back through the derailleur, I'm still puzzled).  Taco made up for this setback with a great story about Mama Bear and the Three Cubs...have him tell you sometime.

Tidbits: Lessons learned...carry a spare derailleur hanger (and a chain tool)!  Be careful when riding with Taco (hence his nickname, it's not the food), I see a pattern.  :)

Oh... and those bears...

Time Trial to benefit Toys for Tots

Notes:  Bikeworks sponsored a benefit time trial to collect toys for tots.  Entrance fee was to provide a new toy for charity.  After arriving at 0630 to mark the course as part of a team of four, the race started on time at 0800 with a good turn out of riders.  There was even a pretty girl helping Bob run the race...quite a benefit since all the riders were men!  She even brought a camera to catch some of the fun.  Plenty of good cheer, generosity, and mud to go around (yes, mud...the trails were ridiculously slippery from the previous day's storm).  Clocked my typical time of 37 minutes plus and captured tenth place.   Good fun, good cause.

Jesse after helping the morning crew mark the course...not too happy about having to "watch" the race.
Bob setting up the lineup with a car full of toys...great cause!

On your mark...

Plenty of good cheer...and MUD!

Not Your Average Mud (Sycamore CYN)

    • Place: Sycamore CYN
    • Trailhead: Campground out to and up Backbone, down Guadalasca
    • Riders with OMMB: Hector
    • Miles:12.5
    • Trail Conditions:Rain the night before, slick mud (if you can call it that) most of the way up Backbone.  The "mud" was more like modeling clay, and stuck like shit to tires, derailleurs, shoes, pedals, etc.  Bitch of a time to clean it up!  No traction, shift failures, clip in problems...now I know why riders freak out when it rains out here.
    • Technical Level:  very difficult to balance while climbing, due to the rear wheel constantly sliding in grooves of slickness
    • GPS Track:

    • Trailhead: Cheeseboro Canyon Trail - nice out and back ride, with some short climbs
    • Riders with OMMB: Hector
    • Miles:10.5
    • Weather:Nice and cool... contrary to the last time I rode here!

Toad the Bobcat (Sycamore CYN, CA)

    • Place: Sycamore
    • Trailhead: Out from the campground to Two Foxes then lower Hidden Pond loop, back down Two Foxes
    • Riders with OMMB: Scott
    • Miles:13
    • Weather: dark
    • Trail Conditions: very good... it's the "wet" season so trails are packed and not dusty
    • Wildlife: Toads, big ones, scary big toads...and a Bobcat who jumped into my light ahead.

Shoeless Joe? Noooo...Shoeless Steve! (Big River)

    • Place: Big Shoe River
    • Trailhead: Burnt Shoemill Rd
    • Riders with OMMB: Jeremy and his shoes
    • Miles: Size 9
    • Weather: Clear, but colder than a witch's sole
    • Trail Conditions: good...but still lots of carnage from Sandy
    • Whoops, Yikes, and Oh Sheets: Yeah...whoops alright (more like Oh Sheet)
    • GPS Track:  http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/111864478

Notes: In case it's not obvious, I reached into my bike bag for my biking shoes...hmmm not there...because they are still in the shoe rack at home.  Oh wait, I keep an old pair in the truck...ya know the truck I cleaned out the other day...putting my old shoes back in the shed. doh!   THANKFULLY I was wearing my steel toe work shoes and we were able to kick off a night ride. Had to ride old school, slow as hell up hill, and feet flapping in the wind while I bounced over rough stuff.    All in all... Jeremy lead a great ride on a virtually non-stop good flowing loop.

Tidbits:  Lessons learned...  1) no matter how cold out, shoes should stay in the bag in the truck.  2) don't clean out truck.

    Monday morning...it's Spring again!

Crazy mild weather today...could have worn a short sleeve shirt. Bob and I rode from the shop to Village Park. Although, the trails were a bit slippery from a thin layer of moisture. Hard to believe I was riding through snow just a few days ago.

Tidbits:  Remember to support your local bike shop during this holiday shopping season!!

Moonlit Slip N Slide (Big River)

    • Place: Big River
    • Trailhead:  Exit 7 (Park and Ride a Pickle)
    • Riders with OMMB:  Jeremy
    • Miles: 7.5-ish (felt like 10 due to the rough terrain we hit)
    • Weather: Clear and cold night...really awesome full moon rose up during our ride
    • Temp:40-ish but felt much colder
    • Trail Conditions:Remnants of the recent snow...didn't really expect a snow ride, several slippery areas on roots and such
    • Wildlife: Jeremy got a glimpse of something brown that crossed the trail behind us...I'm sure it was not a mountain lion nor a chupacabra (because who needs a goat sucker in Big River)

Snake in the Woods (Big River)

Notes: Lead my first Bikeworks Saturday morning ride today.  We had a good turnout with 12 riders starting from Exit 7 (Park-n-Ride a Pickle lot).  It's the largest group I've led and when we were on switchback trails I would look back, seemed like I was the head of a very long snake!

Although I had hoped to also ride the single-track that loops all the way around Carr Pond, we were limited for time.   All in all a good clean ride at a manageable pace (as that was a given with me in the lead!)

Tidbits:  My generous friend from CT joined us....thanks J!

    The Tear Down

Bob, Matt, Chris, Jay, and I rode at a leisurely pace to take down the arrows and tape from the time trial. Real damp and cool this morning.  The other thing... scoped out the terrain to find another route around the private land at the northwest end of Pine Needles.  The owner has had enough of people crossing over his land.  So hope is to route a new trail...RIGHT on his border.

Tidbits: Next time trial will be Dec 22, daytime.  It will be a Toy's for Tots event...bring a toy for donation to the ride.

    Night Time Trial Round #2

Another fun time trial, although a chilly night, course record breaking times resulted...

...I pretty much matched by previous time (last time on Bob's carbon hardtail Superfly, this time on the Kona Satori full suspension).  Plenty of quicker riders in front of me this time. It was great to see my friends from CT make the trip over here! Unfortunately not knowing the course held Jeremy back (maybe I should keep it that way, knowing how fast he actually is).

(Sycamore CYN) You ride up, you ride down, you ride up, you ride down

    Place: Sycamore CYN, CA

Notes: Another evening ride, this time with Hector.  We climbed a "new" trail for about a mile point three, then right back down.  Trail was Fireline, very smooth and in excellent condition.  Realizing it was not meant for MTB's (as the sign at the top trail crossing indicated), explains why it was in good shape...foot traffic only.  We then proceeded to do the usual climb up Backbone, then down Guadalasca.  Wild night time ride!

Hector suggested a Mexican Seafood restaurant on the way back to Port Hueneme... they had kick-ass shrimp and fish soup (or was it stew?).  Of course he had shrimp and octopus...hmmm (well it looked good anyway).

Hector hike-biking up a steep section of Fireline

Um yeah, but my bike doesn't look like that one on the sign

Hey, it's dusty out there!  Especially when following Hector downhill.

And a great way to wash that dust down... from the makers of Fat Tire. Snow Day, a delicious black lager.

    Headin home!!!

A "Syc" Warm Up Ride (Sycamore CYN)

Place: Sycamore Canyon, Point Mugu State Park, CA

Notes: Ron and I went out for a night ride through the canyon.  Nice ride, even if the freaky night birds with their creepy glowing eyes kept flying in front of us. Better than coyotes I guess, of which we did hear plenty of! Yet, even though we rode the trail "Two Foxes", actually only saw one fox.

    Poor Deer

Just me and Jesse Dog for about 5 miles.   Surveyed damage and cleared off additional trails in Village Park...all in decent shape.  One strange sight, a deer inside the cemetery fence.  Quite comical watching Jesse try to figure out how to get in, and the deer trying to get out.  When we returned from the ride, deer was gone, must have found its way.

Tidbits:  Talk of another Night Time Trial in Nov...will post the details when planned.

    Sandy Beetch

Went for a mostly night ride to scope out the trail conditions after Hurricane Sandy graced us with her presence.  She's not very friendly (a real Beetch, ask New Joysee).  Actually not too bad in Swansea...and someone is already leaf blowing the trails clear.  On the NTT loop found a medium sized tree blocking Lakeside, a small tree blocking Ridge Trail, and a very large tree blocking entrances to Men's and Ladies Room.   Also more small trees down here and there, one near the start of Two Guys.  I'm guessing the Elves will be out in force this weekend.  ;)

Tidbits:  Saw a deer in the headlights...well, bike lights.

    Big Night River

    • Trailhead: Burnt Sawmill Rd
    • Riders with OMMB: Jeremy and Al
    • Miles: almost 12

Notes: We followed Jeremy around his favorite route at Big River.  I was on Bob's Superfly Elite, since he never takes it there ;) and Al was chugging along on his Niner single speed (God love ya).  Of course Jeremy was showin us up on his 26!  Bob's bike was like riding a bucking bronco, quick...but can't wait to be on a full suspension again.   Lights went on about mile 10.  Good times.

All for this... Night Time Trial #1

Notes: Several rides early this week, mostly preparing the course for the BikeWorks Night Time Trial.  The turn out was great...30 riders.  Riding the course with demo lights from Light in Motion as fast as you possibly can was a real challenge at night. I managed a surprisingly good finish time, I'm sure home court advantage had lots to do with it. It was awesome to see the course markers shining at night with alien like lights buzzing around the woods.  A great time, all the prep work was worth it!

Hansel and Gretel Two for Tuesday

The morning ride with Bob consisted mostly of marking the Night Time Trial loop with reflective tacks.  Something that Hansel and Gretel could have used.   But unlike Hansel and Gretel, birds did not eat our tacks (the animal activists would be quite upset with that), instead we ran out of tacks about half way.

The evening ride with Jesse was an attempt at finishing the trail of tacks, then riding a bit of the course to see how the "reflective" tacks showed up.   Both attemps were a fail...could not find said tacks at either Walmart in the area, then when riding the trails that were done, could not see the markers very well.  Re-plan!

Tidbits: Came across John, Tim, and a new guy Josh on the trail.  Looks like there's going to be a lot of night riders this season!  Light -em up!

Columbus Day is for hiking right? (Arcadia)

Right!  So that's what we did.  A nice 8 mile loop around Arcadia with Teri, Cara, Josh and the four-leggers (Shiloh, Ollie, and Jesse).   Other than the overabundance of horse crap on the trail and a freaky bow hunter just standing in the middle of the woods, we had a good time.

          What's a Satori?

Since my bike is still broke, Bob being Bob, allowed me to use a "shop" bike.  I assumed he meant the usual shop bike, Denny's old Gary Fisher.  So when he said, "go get the Satori near the full suspension bikes" when I arrived at the shop, I assumed that the GF must be a Satori, since there is no model name marked on it.  I strolled right by the full suspension bikes and grabbed the GF, put my pedals on, adjusted the seat and headed out the door.  Bob comes out and says, "why the heck do you have that?, I said the Satori."  Okay.  So I'm like..."What's a Satori?"

          This is a "Satori"!!

It's brand new 2013 Kona 29er full suspension!     And it's details... Click On

Well I gotta say...I was VERY impressed with this bike.  For me, the fit and comfort of the 18 inch frame was perfect.  Although the suspension felt squishy when bouncing on the bike, it was NOT felt while riding.  Front and rear shocks had 3 position adjustments which, for me, felt best in the middle setting. Great handling bike, and the adjust-on-the-fly seat adjustment actually served a purpose.   LOVED this bike.  Oh, good ride too...

Notes: Goal was to meet up for the "old guys" ride at 0830, but the traffic through Providence caused me to miss the start.  So I used my apparantly not-so-good Mohegan tracking skills to follow the bike tracks in hopes of catching the group.  Lost the trail.  But got a nice loop on mostly technical single track around the pond.

Tidbits: I stumbled on some previously unmapped (by me) single track on the west side of Carr.  See track below.  Looks like the trails crews have been busy since I was here last.  Good stuff.

              Hike up, Hobble down

              • Place: Mt Washington
              • Trailhead: Pinkham Notch
              • Miles: 6-ish
              • Trail Conditions: Rocks, rocks, and rocks, very worn trail
              • Technical Level: Pretty tough hike given the lack of switchbacks
              • GPS Track:

Notes: Teri lead this hike up to the Hermit Lake Shelter, near the base of Tuckerman Ravine.  Sore legs and all we made it up in good time. Great views of Tuckerman and other ravines. Coming down was another story...Teri had to keep the knee straight while descending the whole way.  Watching the youngin's sprint down the rocky trail made us both think of days gone by...

Tidbits: Can't imagine hiking up here in the winter to ski Tuckerman's...just crazy.

              Hiking Ouch

              • Place: North Moat Mountain, North Conway, NH
              • Trailhead: Diana's Baths
              • Hikers: T and OMMB
              • Miles: 10.66
              • Weather: perfect
              • Technical Level: categorized as "strenuous" hike (duh)
              • Wildlife: Red Squirrels, Chipmunks. a Hummingbird (not an hallucination!), a Peregrine Falcon, some butterflies, and a fully tattooed man who told us to watch for the falcon.

Notes: This was a long ass hike.  Too long an ass hike for our first day.  The vertical wasn't so bad...it was the distance.  Would we climb North Moat again?  Yep...but probably from a more direct route.  The views from 80% of this route are excellent and the summit offers a 360 degree unobstructed view that includes Mt Washington, Mt Chocorua, North Conway, and Cranmore Ski area.

Tidbits: Teri discovered that she has a knee problem...only when traveling downhill while bending the knee. She was in pain...but stuck it out the whole hike down...ouch!!  Both of us were sore for days!  The nightly visits to the hot tub helped...a little.

Post Dental Ride -or- Pre Ride Dental Appt?

              • Place: Weetamoo Woods, Tiverton RI
              • Trailhead: Lafayette Rd off Route 77
              • Riders with OMMB: none
              • Miles: 7.25
              • Weather: perfect
              • Trail Conditions: very dry, plenty of rock gardens, good workout
              • GPS Track:  GPX File

Notes:  What's nice about my dental appointments is that my dentist is located very close to Weetamoo Woods, making it way to convenient to go for a post dental ride.  I suppose I could always plan to ride here, and schedule a pre-ride dental appointment, but that would be just weird.   Anyway, headed for the trails on the north end, where there's really only one decent track over some cool terrain, but finding your way out of there down the east side now lands you in a maze of new home developments. Not worth it.  Stick to the documented trails, maps can be found at several kiosks.

Tidbits: North Conway anyone?  Looking forward to hiking and checking out some of the new Moat Mountain Trail System.

              Villagers Beware!

              • Place: Village Park, Swansea MA
              • Trailhead: Library
              • Riders with OMMB: Jesse Dog Wallop
              • Miles: 5-ish
              • Trail Conditions: very dry, dryest I've seen.  Several slide outs.
              • Wildlife: Oh yeah...a large coyote, the largest I've seen.

Notes: Only notable item was the coyote.  I spotted it heading up the trail, about the size of Jesse but with even longer legs.  Pretty freaky.  Jesse got the scent and took chase...he couldn't resist.  Thankfully he didn't catch the thing, but I know he got close when I heard lots of snarls!  Time to strap my knife to the camelback.

Tidbits: So sad...saw a Berkshire Brewing Company delivery truck broke down in the middle of Rte 6.  Maybe I should have offered a tow...

              ...to my house!

17: 5 miles just for the fun of it. T, Jesse, and me.

              19: 21 miles with Teri -  http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/vVXpyRz0Wg0

21: 9 miles with Al, Bob, and Greg

23: 8 miles with Teri - An "Oh Sheet" for T on this one...slid out on Coaster and ended up with bruises, pricker pokes, and whiplash!  As a good trooper, continued on to be abused on the climb to Allen's Overlook!!

24: 6 miles with Bob on an introduction to some exit 7 trails

Tidbits:  42 total miles for T: (nice job!!)....57 for the old guy.

Two Days, Too Hot, Too Dry (Not)

              • Place: Sycamore Canyon, Point Mugu State Park, CA
              • Weather: day 1 too hot for OMMB, day 2 nice (rode later in the day), although the dry weather was a welcome relief for the jungle like RI humidity
              • Wildlife: something large, but dead ...oh and then there was that diamond back rattler that I almost ran over...just a baby one (sorry no picture)
              • GPS Track:
Notes: Had the pleasure of riding West Coast again.  We didn't have the usual gang, for one reason or another, but thankfully Hector is always willing to kick my ass at Sycamore.  Day 1 was a jet lagged, super hot and tired, oven like dry heat of a day that killed me.  I actually felt a bit light-headed on the climb.  I was real slow and sluggish until I ran across this skeleton on the side of  the trail...

...inspired me to climb a lot faster because whatever dragged that down had to be pretty big (I should have put something next to it for relational aspect, but the skull was much larger than my hand).

In contrast, I felt great on Day 2, riding a hard tail Comp 29er...good quick bike.

              STEAMY

Notes: Just me and Jesse for this ride.  It was so humid I actually could see what appeared to be steam rising from the woods.  Eery.  Slippery rocks and roots from the T-storms last night. We just slugged along. Jesse was wiped, even after 20 minutes in the pond.  I didn't feel so great for the rest of the day either...screw this weather.

                • Place: Bradbury State Park, Pownal Maine
                • Trailhead: Campground

                Place:

                Show:

Notes: As usual...great riding on well maintained trails!  T joined me on "Win", others I was solo with occasional chit-chat with random riders.

Tidbits: Martin Sexton free concert at LL Bean Summer In the Park Series was tops!!! Perfect outdoor setting for his music with a much appreciative crowd.

                Just a quicky, yes thorny

                • Place: John Chafee Nature Preserve, North Kingstown, RI
                • Miles: 4.5-ish
                • Whoops, Yikes, and Oh Sheets:  about 2 minutes into the ride hopped over a log, which collapsed and sent me into a brier patch. Removed myself from said patch verrrry carefully, then proceeded to swear, quietly to myself of course.  Ended up with a rear flat 30 minutes later, not surprised.

Notes: Been meaning to ride this place since walking the dogs with friends to view Harbor Seals here.  Very small area with easy trails, you could squeeze out 7 or 8 miles if desired.

                A mailbox in a fireplace....
